Unboozle is an app that helps adults reduce their consumption of alcohol through a fun and engaging experience. It combines wellness and gaming – we understand that is an unlikely duo, but here we are.

What is Unboozle?

Nothing. Nada. Zip. It is FREE. No excuses.

What does Unboozle cost?

Adults of legal drinking age in their countries of residence can use Unboozle.

Who can use Unboozle?

You could become healthier, wealthier, and perhaps even wiser, all while bonding with your friends and family. Reducing drinking is always a good idea, and since much drinking is done socially, it would help if your drinking buddies were on the same path. You can all feel better together, along with having extra money in your pockets that could be put to something more useful than a hangover inducer.

What are the benefits of using Unboozle?

Unboozle offers two types of challenges to help you keep that wine bottle in the cellar: a self challenge and a group challenge. You can start one or both types of challenges, and also accept a group challenge from someone else. You can be part of multiple challenges at once, with unlimited group challenges and one self challenge.

If you want to start slowly, perhaps create a self challenge first to get the hang of it and test your resilience. Once you understand how it works and see the benefits, you can next create a group and invite your friends/family to improve everyone’s drinking habits!

What types of challenges does Unboozle offer?

No, you can do a self challenge instead and keep your excesses to yourself.

Do I have to be in a group to use Unboozle?

Download the Unboozle app, create your profile (these steps take all of about 20 seconds), and start a challenge!

Pick a challenge type:

Perhaps you just want to try it out by yourself before revealing your habits to your friends.

Self challenge = Just you

Group challenge = As many of your friends/family/fellow drinkers you would like, only invited by you. You become the bartender!

Determine an end-of-challenge prize:

The incentive! The end-of-challenge reward. What does the best un-drinker get? If it’s a self challenge, perhaps treat yourself to a massage or a new computer if you never go over your weekly allotted freebie drinks. If it’s a group challenge, perhaps each player pays the winner $$. All funds are handled outside of the app. The key is to make it memorable and sufficient enough to keep players engaged.

Determine a weekly penalty:

This is a weekly thing. Every time someone goes above their weekly allotted ‘freebies’ (that number is determined by you), they’re penalized. If it’s a self challenge, perhaps the penalty is you have to put $$ towards a charity or you can’t watch TV/streaming content for a week. If it’s a group challenge, perhaps the penalty for each guilty player is 100 push-ups or eating a can of anchovies, even better posted on some form of social media. Again, all funds are handled outside of the app.

Set the start date:

It always starts on a Monday. After the weekend debauchery, it’s nice to have a fresh start.

Set the challenge duration:

You’ve started this, so you can decide. Torture for up to 12 weeks, or keep it simple at just a few. All challenges are in weeks.

Set your weekly freebie drinks:

This isn’t about sobriety, but about reducing. So give yourself and/or your group some leeway and have some ‘freebies’ each week. If you go over that amount in a week, though, it’s penalty time, but then you get a fresh start on Monday again. A reason to love Mondays.

Set the default drinks per day:

You and/or your group might forget to log drinks, but that is what this whole un-drinking game is about! If you don’t log them, it doesn’t work. Give a good penalty incentive to make sure that everyone logs them in weekly. If they don’t log drinks by the end of each week, this number is the amount that they will get each day they miss, even if they were as clean as a whistle.

How do I start an Unboozle challenge?

Here are some ideas to either use or help get you started. We recommend keeping it simple yet motivating, a bit fun, and realistic for your group (most people don’t have a lot of spare cash to throw around these days!).

End of challenge prizes for self challenges:

  • If you don’t exceed a pre-determined number of drinks, buy new bike/electronic item/ concert ticket/etc

  • If you never go over your weekly freebie drinks, enjoy a spa day

  • If you have at least 1 dry week, splurge at a trendy restaurant

End of challenge prizes for group challenges:

  • Winner wins $$ prize from each competitor

  • Loser pays for/makes dinner for rest of group

  • Loser spends 12 consecutive hours at a pancake restaurant, where each pancake consumed reduces the time by 1 hour

Weekly penalties for self challenges:

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, donate $$ to charity

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, put $$ into your savings account

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, no TV watching for 1 week

Weekly penalties for group challenges:

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, put $$ penalty towards winning pot

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, do 100 push-ups with video validation

  • If you go over the week’s freebie drinks, eat a can of anchovies (or something that would make you want to puke)

I need help coming up with prize and penalty ideas!
  • Log in to the Unboozle app.

  • Click on ‘My drinks’ at the bottom of the screen.

  • Select the number of drinks you’ve consumed each day (you can only enter the drinks consumed for that week).

  • Set notifications in your Profile to help remind yourself to log in. Remember, you must log your drinks on a weekly basis, by early Monday for the prior week. If you don’t, you will be given the default number of drinks and be appropriately penalized.

  • Hope that everyone else had less will power than you did!

How do I log my daily alcohol intake?

If you don’t log your drinks by the end of the week, you will be given the pre-determined number of daily default drinks. You can still change your drinking history in the drinks tracker for your own tracking, but the changes will not be reflected in the weekly and final challenge stats. So stay on top of the game and log those drinks, otherwise this whole gamifying experience quite simply doesn’t work!

What happens if I don’t log in drinks for the week?

Yes, although the data will not change in the historical weekly and final challenge stats. Let’s be honest, though…while you can change your drinking history as much as you want for your own records, do you really remember what you drank 3 weeks ago? Or even 2 nights ago for that matter? Our point is simply stay on top of it!! Make it a daily habit. It literally takes seconds to do.

Can I edit my drinks log for previous weeks?

Beer: 12 ounces or 355 milliliters, 5% ABV (Alcohol By Volume)

Wine: 5 ounces or 150 milliliters, 12% ABV (Alcohol By Volume)

Spirits: 1.5 ounces or 44 milliliters, 40% ABV (Alcohol By Volume)

How much alcohol is equal to one drink?

These are your friends/family members/acquaintances, and we hope that you have honest ones, as this app is based on the good old-fashioned honor code. When it comes to drinking, however, most of us tend to lie about it a teency weency bit. If you suspect some major exaggerations, though, call them out on it – that is a good use of the private group feed that is included in the app.

What if I think that someone in the group is…well, er…LYING about their drinks consumption?

Again, these are your people, and we hope that your people do the right thing when it comes to their family and friends! If they don’t, unfortunately we can’t enforce it. Find some new people.

What can I do if someone refuses to pay up if they lose?

Turning on notifications helps make sure you log in your daily drinks, and we also try to deliver a little humor with these reminders.

  • Log in to the Unboozle app.

  • Click on ‘Profile’ at the bottom of the screen.

  • Click on ‘Notifications’.

  • Click which days/times you would like to receive notifications.

  • Choose from Weekly status, General app notifications, and Email updates.

How do I turn on/off notifications?

If you don’t want to use the Unboozle app anymore, simply stop. You might be letting yourself and/or your group members down, but we’re not here to give you a guilt trip. Open a bottle of beer and move on. Go back in to the Unboozle app when you get that first hangover.

What if I no longer want to participate while a challenge is active?

If you would like to delete your account, go into your profile in the Unboozle app and click on ‘Delete account’. We do not sell your data, so you don’t need to worry about that. Maybe hang in there just a while longer. We won’t bite.

How do I delete my account from Unboozle?

In a way. There is a feed to share information, but it is not publicly available outside of the private group - you cannot take a screenshot of your activity in the app. Everyone in your private group can see the weekly results and the running total group results, but they don’t see any other challenges you might be part of, including a self challenge. There is an honor code to not publicly share information that is shared within your Unboozle group, so be a good friend and honor it! The aim of the app is to connect with your people to help achieve wellness and better habits, and not to inform the world that your bestie drank too much wine last night.

Is Unboozle a social media app?

Yes. We let you use an app for free that we invest in and work very hard to create and maintain, so the money has to come from somewhere. We do not sell your data to the advertisers, though – the ads just appear in the app with some stuff that we think/hope you might like.

Are there third-party advertisements in Unboozle?

Please contact your doctor or other health care professional if you think you have a drinking problem.
